The couple wanted a home that felt refined, elegant, and distinctly theirs—something highly functional yet with thoughtful details and a sense of character. It was equally important that the house remain rooted in its context, respecting the heritage and appearance of the conservation area.
Working within these parameters, I developed a design strategy that allowed for a substantial internal transformation with a restrained external approach. The result is a cohesive and considered interior that supports daily life while honouring the building’s original charm.
…how it started
My clients approached me with a clear vision: to upgrade their beautiful period home in the conservation area of St Albans. While the house had undeniable character and charm, its layout no longer suited their way of living. Rather than extend or alter the external structure, they wanted to work entirely within the existing envelope—rethinking, reorganising, and refining almost every room.
The brief was ambitious. Each space needed to function more efficiently, feel more connected, and offer a greater sense of calm and clarity. That meant improving flow, maximising storage, enhancing natural light where possible, and introducing contemporary elements that would sit comfortably within the existing architectural language. From the kitchen and bathrooms to the living spaces and bedrooms, every area was reconsidered.
